How to Keep your Patrol PC® Running Smoothly

Keeping mobile technology running reliably is essential for agencies that depend on their equipment throughout every shift. Many common issues, however, can be prevented or resolved with a few simple maintenance and troubleshooting steps.

For this edition of Inside Patrol PC®, we spoke with Josue from the Patrol PC® Technical Support Team about some of the most common issues agencies encounter and what they can do to keep their MDTs, docks, and accessories running smoothly.

What are the most common issues customers run into?

Some of the most common questions involve devices not booting, software crashing, or peripherals not responding.

New installations may experience setup-related issues, such as missing drivers or outdated software. Over time, agencies may encounter issues related to battery wear, storage limitations, or changes to system settings.

Keeping software and firmware current and checking connections regularly can prevent many of these problems.

What troubleshooting steps fix issues the fastest?

Before assuming there is a hardware problem, start with a few basic checks:

  • Restart the device.
  • Check for Windows, driver, or firmware updates.
  • Verify cables, docks, antennas, and power connections.
  • Clear temporary files or reset basic settings.

Loose connections and outdated software can account for a surprising number of issues. Addressing those first can often get a device back up and running quickly.

Where do most common system issues come from?

Many issues are related to system settings, missed updates, or software interactions that can change over time as devices are used and updated.

Hardware problems do occur, but they are less common. When hardware does require attention, wear items such as batteries or charging components can be a factor.

When troubleshooting, it helps to look at the system as a whole rather than focusing on one component. A mobile computer, dock, power connection, antenna, software, and other peripherals all need to work together properly.

What tips do you give to prevent issues before they happen?

A few routine habits can help reduce downtime and keep equipment performing well.

Keep Software and Drivers Updated

Install Windows updates as they become available and keep firmware and driver updates current. Firmware updates are sometimes overlooked, but they can address performance, compatibility, and other background issues.

Check Connections Regularly

Make sure power connections are secure and periodically check docks, cables, and LTE or antenna connections.

Use appropriate, certified power accessories for your equipment.

Perform Basic Maintenance

Regularly clean the device ports and screen, reboot devices periodically, and monitor battery health.

Make sure the computer is properly secured in its dock when being used in a vehicle.

Consider the Environment

Patrol equipment operates in conditions that can be harder on technology than a typical office environment.

Whenever possible:

  • Avoid prolonged exposure to extreme heat, such as in a parked vehicle.
  • Keep equipment dry.
  • Prevent dust and debris from accumulating around ports and other openings.
  • Use proper mounting to help protect equipment from vibration and movement.

Even rugged equipment benefits from proper care and installation.

Store and Transport Equipment Carefully

When transporting a mobile computer outside the vehicle, use appropriate protection such as a padded carrying case.

Avoid leaving the device loose in the vehicle or placing heavy equipment on top of it. If the device will be stored for an extended period, power it down appropriately.

Protect Your Data

Equipment maintenance is only part of keeping a mobile computing system reliable. Agencies should also have appropriate data protection practices in place.

Sync important files regularly to an approved server or cloud environment, use automatic backups when possible, keep security software current, and avoid storing critical information in only one location.

How Can Agencies Maximize Equipment Lifespan?

Routine care can go a long way toward maintaining mobile technology.

Regular updates, proper mounting, safe storage, clean equipment, and attention to connections can all help extend the useful life of a device.

And when something doesn’t seem right, addressing the issue early can help prevent a small problem from becoming a larger one.

The Bottom Line

From software updates and secure connections to proper mounting and everyday care, keeping mobile technology reliable requires attention to the details that can make a difference in the field.
